Day 37, July 3 - Glacier Express

    We boarded the Glacier Express in St. Moritz after breakfast and got settled into our first-class seats. The train is panoramic, which means you can see out the top of the coach. The train trip was about 8 hours long but we cruised through the most beautiful sights.

The route is part of the Rhaetian Railway, and we retraced some of the route we took the previous day to get to St. Moritz. It was the Albula line, one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railways in the world with 55 bridges and 39 tunnels. It’s 38.32 miles long. 

The Albula line and the Bernina railway line were jointly recorded in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008.

  Days 1-2 in Barcelona May 27-29 Our travel day went well – no glitches, just had to sit in Chicago for 6 hours. Our flight was easy – a little over 8 hours to Barcelona – but it was overnight. Neither of us sleep well on an airplane. We arrived in Barcelona and waited in line for at least an hour – with about 500 other people, easily – to get through customs, but we came out the other side and our driver was waiting for us to take us to our hotel. Our hotel doesn’t have an elevator, but it does have air conditioning – thank goodness. It’s right on Placa Reial , which was built in the mid-19th century on the site of a demolished Capuchin monastery. Designed by architect Francesc Daniel Molina I Casamajo, the neoclassical square was originally intended to exalt the Spanish monarchy but evolved into a vibrant hub of bohemian culture and nightlife. Days 19-21 - June 16-19 Bordeaux

June 16  We had breakfast on the boat Tuesday, June 16, then disembarked around 9 am.  We schlepped our luggage – we each have one carry-on, a personal item and I have my CPAP - plus we found these neck pillows that we can stuff with underwear and t-shirts – into Esplanade des Quinconces where our hotel is located. It wasn’t far, but my hip thing slowed us down. Didn’t make any difference, we couldn’t check in to the hotel until 2 pm, but we stored our luggage and went exploring. The Place des Quinconces is among the largest city squares in Europe. It was laid out in 1820 on the site of Chateau Trompette and was intended to prevent rebellion against the city. Its guns were turned toward the center. Its current shape (a lengthened rectangle rounded off with a semicircle) was adopted in 1816.
